Comedy

Disclaimer: The actual genre is very extensive, and these are only a few recomendations and personal opinions.

Genre definition

The slice of life and comedy genres overlap a lot, but each have their own distinct traits. Comedy shows like The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K, Ouran Highschool Host Club and K-On could also be considered slice of life shows. Slice of life and comedy are very light genres, with many shows following a sort of adventure-of-the-day format, as well as an overarching plot.

The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K (Saiki Kusuo No Sai-Nan)

The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K, the newest release out of the three listed earlier, is the perfect amount of comedic to encapsulate the genre as a whole. It doesn't go overboard with the jokes or drag them on for episodes at a time, and while many of the characters are stereotypes, they don't feel flat at all. The story is portrayed through the lens of a teenage boy who has posessed psychic superpowers since birth, but it's not a good thing, as many fans may think at first. To be constantly bombarded with the thoughts of everyone around you and to be able to see the internal organs of anyone if you look at them for too long is torture for any highschooler. It's a good show to watch if you're new to anime.

K-on

K-On is funny, heartfelt, emotional, has amazing songs, and it was one of the first animes I ever watched. K-On follows a group of highschool girls who want to bring the school's old band club back to life. The artstyle is very cute, and the way the backgrounds and characters are drawn is one of my favorite artstyles. It's funny, and sweet, and something about the friendship between the band members is so heartfelt and genuine.

Ouran Highschool Host Club

Ouran Highschool Host Club was the first anime I ever watched, and it still feels nostalgic sometimes. The characters are all unique and funny, and even side characters have depth. It's about a young highschooler named Haruhi, attending an incredibly fancy school on scholarship, who accidentally accrues millions of dollars in debt with the school's local host club, because rich people have that much time on their hands. Haruhi needs to run errands for the eccentric rich teenagers of the club to pay off the debt, but soon, they discover something that could change Haruhi's role in the club. I won't spoil it, but the story is really funny and sweet, and the artstyle is unique, the backgrounds are beautiful, and the opening, ending, and even the background music are amazing and so fitting.
